A pool acid wash is a deep cleaning process used to remove stains, algae buildup, and discoloration from a pool's surface, typically made of plaster or Pebble Tec. It involves draining the pool and applying a mixture of muriatic acid and water to the interior surface to strip away a thin layer of material, revealing a fresh, clean layer underneath.
When Is an Acid Wash Needed?
A pool acid wash is recommended when:
The pool has excessive algae growth that regular cleaning can’t remove.
The water has been stagnant for an extended period, leading to stubborn stains.
There is significant calcium buildup or mineral deposits on the surface.
The pool surface has developed discoloration from chemicals or organic debris.
How Is It Done?
Drain the Pool – The pool must be completely emptied.
Apply the Acid Solution – A diluted muriatic acid solution is carefully applied to the walls and floor.
Scrub the Surface – The acid is scrubbed into the surface to remove stains and buildup.
Neutralize the Acid – Baking soda or soda ash is used to neutralize any remaining acid.
Rinse and Refill – The pool is thoroughly rinsed before refilling with fresh water.
Important Considerations
Acid washing should be performed by professionals to ensure safety and prevent damage to the pool surface.
It should not be done too frequently, as it wears down the pool plaster over time.
Proper protective gear and ventilation are essential due to the strong fumes from the acid.
