How Often Should You Clean Your Pool Filter?
The frequency of pool filter cleaning depends on the type of filter you have and your pool’s usage. Cleaning your filter regularly ensures clear water, efficient filtration, and longer equipment life.
Recommended Cleaning Schedule by Filter Type:
🟢 Sand Filter
🔹 Backwash every 4–6 weeks or when the pressure gauge rises by 8–10 PSI from normal.
🔹 Deep Clean: Every 6 months to remove oils and debris buildup.
🔹 Replace Sand: Every 5–7 years for optimal filtration.
🔵 Cartridge Filter
🔹 Rinse every 2–6 weeks (depends on pool usage and debris load).
🔹 Deep Clean: Every 3–6 months using a filter cleaning solution.
🔹 Replace Cartridges: Every 1–3 years, depending on condition.
⚪ Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.) Filter
🔹 Backwash every 4–6 weeks or when the pressure increases by 8–10 PSI.
🔹 Full Breakdown Cleaning: Every 6 months (disassemble and clean the grids).
🔹 Replace D.E. Powder: After each backwash.
